EXPLORATION OF CAREER OPTIONS PERSONAL TALENTS AND SKILLS FOR SUCCESS TECHNOLOGY SKILLS
HIGH SCHOOL Analyze several career clusters and occupational choices.

Correlate educational achievement and career goals.

Develop career plans based on informed choice, labor market information, assessment of interests and skills, occupational exploration, and work experience.

Examine affordability and availability of various types of apprentice programs, vocational programs, and college programs.
Describe the necessary ethical and personal skills and qualities needed for successful employment.

Compile the documents necessary to obtain a job.

I. EXPLORATION OF CAREER OPTIONS

    A. Career Clusters
      1. Standard: The student will analyze several career clusters and occupational choices. The student will correlate educational achievement and career goals.
      2. Assessment: Show several career clusters and occupational choices and correlate with educational achievement and career goals.
        Possible assessments include:
          - locate, evaluate, and interpret information about a variety of career clusters
          - create a presentation of several career clusters that are of interest
          - find specific information on defined career clusters
          - find, watch, and critique a video related to the career that is of interest
          - list the advantages and disadvantages of self-employment (entrepreneurship) as a career option
          - analyze the relationship between educational achievement and career planning
          - validate the need for positive attitudes and work habits toward learning and work
          - relate academic and vocational skills to personal and career goals and interest
          - shadow an adult in an occupation of choice
          - justify personal criteria for making decisions about education, training, and career goals
          - describe the relationship of academic and vocational skills to personal interest

        Possible assessments include:
          - complete and analyze Harrington O'Shea Interest Inventory
          - complete and print out on the COSIS program
          - write an analysis of a career choice, including the following:
          • skills needed
          • prerequisite education
          • certification or license needed
          • opportunity for promotions
          • future trends in this career
          • information on related career
          - create a timeline, using a spread sheet, of career goals for the next twenty years, including the following:
          • further education
          • part time or full time jobs
          • promotions
          • obstacles that may be encountered
          - describe the educational requirements of various occupations
          - participate in a Career Fair
          - participate in a Junior Achievement program

        • a high school diploma
        • a certificate
        • an AA (Associates of Arts) degree
        • an AS (Associates of Science) degree
        • an AAS (Associates of Applied Science) degree
        • a BA or BS (Bachelor of Arts or Sciences) degree
        • a Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) degree
        - define the differences between accredited and non-accredited
        - compare four vehicles of further learning (military, apprenticeships, trade schools, and colleges) in terms of costs, own career goals, program availability, application and acceptance procedures, financial aid (grants, scholarships, and loans), location, and other personally defined factors
        - participate in a Career Fair
        - participate in a Junior Achievement program
        - visit a trade school and a two-year or four-year college to gather information for future education
        - learn how to get into college

        Possible assessments include:
          - create a realistic personal monthly budget
          - compute gross earnings, including regular and overtime wages
          - compute NET earnings
          - complete a six month simulated checkbook record
          - compute compound interest for CD's and IRA's
          - complete a 1040EZ IRS tax form
          - complete a price list of major purchases desired in own lifetime
          - compute opportunity costs for skilled vs. unskilled labor
          - analyze an apartment lease, a car contract, insurance policies, and tax tables
          - explain differences between social security, unemployment insurance, and workman's compensation
          - recognize how to save money and establish and use credit
