SUPPORT SKILLS

Scientific Process

Prekindergarten: The student will make observations based on experiences.
-match objects by color, size, or shape
-sort by color, size, or shape
      -group objects by two attributes
      -use scientific vocabulary when appropriate
      -apply appropriate safety procedures
      -use scientific tools appropriately

Physical Science

Prekindergarten: The student will use the five senses to sort the different states of matter and their observable characteristics.
-recognize attributes of solids, liquids, and/or a gas (i.e., texture, shape, and color)
-observe water as a solid, liquid, and gas
-touch, taste, smell, view, and hear a variety of objects
-compare the weights of different objects
      -compare liquid volumes
-manipulate/play in water, sand, birdseed, etc.

Life Science

Prekindergarten: The student will explore living and nonliving things.
      -explore living and nonliving things
-compare the characteristics of living and nonliving things
-plant beans and observe their growth
-listen to nonfiction selections about growing, animals, and other life science related stories
-observe insects (ant farms, caterpillars, and magnified bug boxes)
      -discuss pet care

Earth Science

Prekindergarten: The student will observe the weather and the seasons.
-observe the influences weather has on what people wear
-observe changes of plants and animals in the environment to demonstrate changes of the seasons
-listen to nonfiction stories about the weather and changes in seasons
-find and/or draw pictures about changes of seasons and weather

Impact on Society

Prekindergarten: The student will explore some of the Earth's natural resources.
-explore the resources of the Earth (water and trees)
-explore ways to recycle, reuse, or renew Earth's resources
-make something different out of recycled materials (i.e., musical instruments out of milk cartons)
      -beautify own school environment
-listen to stories about recycling and conservation

Connections of Science

Preschool through fourth grade proficiencies for this strand are integrated into the other five strands, particularly the strand of Scientific Process.
