Historical and Cultural Inquiries
The student will investigate the concept of self in relationship to others.
-use vocabulary such as "before and after," "yesterday," "today," and "tomorrow"
-sequence pictures in a simple story
-sing and rhyme to explore vocabulary associated with a calendar (day, week, month, and year)
-describe own life events with concepts of past and present (moving from one house to another; new family members)
-recognize various holidays and celebrations
-identify behavior expected of students
-participate in various forms of artistic expression (folk dances, songs, games, and visual arts)
-discuss growth and change (from baby to preschooler)
-use what and where questions
Geographic Skills and Concepts
The student will connect the concept of self to the concept of being in a space.
-use vocabulary, such as "far," "above," "below," "inside," "over," and "under."
-recognize maps of the classroom ("Follow the yellow brick road to the art area.")
-observe places (school, house, and playground)
-observe weather (weather charts and dressing appropriately)
-listen to literature in order to explore similarities and differences of rural and urban living
-observe locations of different classroom centers (bathrooms, painting, story circle)
-observe and explore ways of adapting to the natural environment (dress and housing)
-recycle some materials found at school
-demonstrate knowledge of and respect for personal space and that of others
Civic Concepts and Systems
The student will investigate differences between self and group.
-state safety reasons for rules
-connect some actions with their consequences
-recognize characteristics of appropriate behaviors (good citizenship)
-responsibility for personal items (backpack, coat, and snack box)
-respect for other people and their property
-use simple problem solving strategies to resolve conflicts
Economic Perspectives
The student will model the concept of ownership.
-meet basic classroom needs appropriately (chores, independence skills)
-use toys and tools in appropriate ways
