Our History

Adams County School District No. 1, Mapleton Public Schools, consists of the old Adams County School Districts Numbers 1 and 16. School District No. 1 was originally organized in 1903. However, the present boundaries, with slight modifications, were set in 1955, when the reorganization occurred. The papers of reorganization are stored in the archives at the Old Adams County Court House in Brighton, Colorado. They were placed there when the position of County Superintendent of Schools was abolished.

Generally, the district boundaries are Huron, Zuni and Franklin Streets on the west, 52nd Avenue on the south, and the South Platte River and Colorado Boulevard on the east. On the north side, the boundary reaches in one place to 108th Avenue. In terms of land area, the district is the smallest of the five main Adams County districts. There are approximately 18 square miles of land within our boundaries. Nearly 12 square miles are located south of 84th Avenue, and of this portion, nearly 9 square miles are zoned for industrial, commercial, and agricultural development. Of the remaining six square miles located north of 84th Avenue, nearly all is residentially zoned.

At the time of the establishment of Mapleton High School in 1956 in the south end of the district the land was primarily agricultural, consisting of small "truck farms", operated mainly by families of Italian and Japanese-American descent. Vegetables were the main crops and were trucked daily (when in season) to the Denargo and Wazee Markets in North Denver for sale. By contrast the north end of the district was primarily zoned for residential development. A booklet celebrating 30 Years of Educating Future Citizens is available at the Administration Building for more information on the school district and the 30 year history.
