Mapleton school district will try for bond issue - again

Colorado's Building Excellent Schools Today program has the impoverished Mapleton school district in line for a $32 million school improvement grant. But to land the money, the district needs to come up with $32 million in matching funds.
The district's board on Tuesday voted unanimously to ask property owners to OK a bond issue to cover the match.

Following the release of state mandated test scores this week, administrators in Mapleton Public Schools say they have proof for the second year in a row the small school reform they started implementing six years ago is working.

The gradual evolution from several large schools to 17 small ones was followed by more losses than gains on the annual state exams.
A $2.6 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation helped fund the reform and national attention was focused on a plan that seemed to be heading south.
But last year, that trend reversed and it’s holding steady for 2010. The 5,401-student district saw gains in reading and math though writing scores dipped, as they did statewide.
All that change has played out against a backdrop of demographic flux – Mapleton’s poverty rate has climbed from 38 percent in 2001 to 54 percent in 2005 to 70 percent in 2009.
“We believe we are seeing the gains we were hoping for five years ago when we reinvented the school district,� said Jackie Kapushion, the district’s assistant superintendent, who sees proof in the results that small schools work.

Among metro area school districts, Denver Public Schools and Mapleton showed significant gains in CSAP and in longitudinal growth, which measures how students improve year to year in each subject. In composite CSAP scores, both districts improved 3 points in reading, 2 points in math and fell by 1 point in writing.

Mapleton marches on with JROTC

For Lt. Col. Bill Arrington, it’s about the small things – like holding the door open for someone,
or other simple, random acts of kindness. Arrington has taught the Air Force’s Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program in upstate New York for the past two years. He moves to Colorado this summer and will start a new JROTC program for Mapleton Public Schools in the fall.
