Homeowners in
Mapleton will pay less in mill levy taxes next year, thanks to the increasing
value property in the district.
The cost of the mill levy to a homeowner in Mapleton is determined by a complex
formula that includes land values, tax revenues received from business in the
district, and other factors.
Looked at over time, however, one thing is clear: district residents pay less per $100,000-worth of residential value than they did in 1992, in spite of increases from a bond election in late 1992 and a mill levy override in 2000.
"The tax per $100,000 in home value has dropped from its peak of $60 in 1993, the year the bond issues took effect, to $34.21 per month in 2002," said Don Herman, the district's chief financial officer.
The changes in an individual family's tax bills might not be that obvious, Herman cautioned.
District taxpayers pay different mill levies, Herman said, including fire, ambulance, and city and county taxes, all having a different impact tax payments. Plus, if the value of a home has increased at the same rate the mill levy dropped over time, the actual dollar amount of tax payment would stay the same.
The $2.7 million mill levy override approved in 2000 was originally expected to cost taxpayers about $7 each month per $100,000 in home value. That has dropped to $5.95 in 2002.
