The Mapleton Board of Education has directed the district to begin a strategic planning process to guide the district for the next three to five years.
The move, in a unanimous vote Tuesday, December 11, comes after board members and district leaders have considered how good strategic planning processes are built and what the possible impact of strategic planning might be on the district.
"Strategic planning will help us anticipate issues; create a common community vision for public education; focus our resources on identified priorities and strategies to move the organization into the future, set priorities for the budget, expectations for leadership, and accountability to the community; share knowledge, power, and risk among the district's stakeholders; and help us meet challenges in a pro-active way ," said Sam Molinaro, the district assistant superintendent.
Board members
and district administrators have been reviewing the likely impact of strategic
planning on district operations for several weeks.
The district now will put together a steering committee that represents the
greater Mapleton community to guide the identification and spelling out of priorities
for the district.
"Reaching agreements about the mission of Mapleton Public Schools and what goals measure our success in our community is critical if we're going to move this district to the next level," said Superintendent Charlotte Scarpella.
"We've done a great job in the recent past stepping up to the challenges of increased accountability from the state," Scarpella added. "But we have to make sure our priorities stay rooted in the needs of the Mapleton community."
The last time the district conducted a similar process was 13 years ago, said board member Patty Schmid.
"This will be a process we have to revisit more often for the district
to be effective," Scarpella said.
