The New America School (Charter)
More than 500 students representing 27 different countries attend New America School to get the education they need and the high school experiences they desire.
The New America School is a public high school dedicated to providing intensive English language instruction to non-native English speaking young adults. Students ages 15-21 years old can learn English for free, take advantage of both day and night classes and earn a high school diploma.
English Language Learners begin their first year at New America taking full English immersion classes for four hours a day. English Language Learners also develop an understanding of what it takes to be successful in America through a societal competency lesson in ESL classes.
Classes are taught using "scaffolded" learning, in which teachers build on concepts to reinforce learning in several different ways.
Teachers use a variety of methods to deliver information. For example, a teacher may explain a concept in English and then act out the information or use illustrations to reflect the same concept. This teaching method helps English Language Learners gain a solid understanding of lessons and classroom material.
The New America School curriculum follows Colorado State and Mapleton Public School District standards. In every lesson, teachers communicate and reinforce English through listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Student life at New America School is very similar to student life at a traditional high school. Students may attend the New America School prom, play on a soccer or basketball team and can participate in a ski and snowboard program in the winter.
