Skyview Academy
A Disciplined Approach to Learning
Skyview Academy High School focuses on the development of
student self-discipline as a foundation of learning. Students will learn
aspects of respect, responsibility and how to help one another to belong and be
safe in a rigorous learning community. Skyview students are expected to be
active participants in their learning by promoting responsible decision making and
self accountability. Students will experience consistency in school structure
and common expectations across all classrooms. Healthy relationships and
self-discipline inspire Skyview students to embrace their individuality and thrive
in our unified learning community. At Skyview Academy, students take ownership
in their learning. As Mapleton's only secondary school that is a part of the
Coalition of Essential Schools, Skyview is guided by 10 Common Principles that
support the school's disciplined approach to learning. Students will work with teachers
who are willing to foster and develop student relationships, and support
education guided by these, as well as other principles:
"Learning to Use One's Mind Well"
"Personalization"
"Student-as-Worker, Teacher-as-Coach"
"A Tone of Decency and Trust"
Skyview Academy is characterized by:
- Students who demonstrate strong intellectual habits of mind.
- School governance that includes the voices of the school community.
- Project-based activities, resulting in portfolios, exhibitions, narratives, journal entries, and transcripts for demonstrating their learning.
- Commitment to the Coalition of Essential Schools common principles (see www.essentialschools.org for more information).
- Inquiry-based instruction.
- Opportunities to access internships and college-level course work during the junior and senior year.
