Dear Monterey Community School Family,
From across our community and into our classrooms, these unexpected times have brought about many unexpected challenges. Although we were fortunate to break ground on Monterey’s remodel and additions in the spring, current circumstances have hindered our ability to meet our District’s guidelines and articulated expectations to safely reopening the building.
As we prepare to reopen our schools, the health and safety of our students and staff is the most important consideration. Reopening a building that is “under construction” in normal times, is difficult and demanding. In these times, it has proven to be unrealistic. To that end, we have made the very difficult decision to postpone reopening Monterey Community School for the 2020-21 school year. Monterey will reopen in the fall of 2021 with a beautiful new gym, a remodeled cafeteria that can be accessed by a new grand- stairway, new elevator, renovated classrooms, a new playground, new parking lot, and safer drop-off loops for buses and parents, among many other significant improvements. This delay will assure that our students and staff – and our construction crews – return next school year to the safe spaces needed to do their very best work.
To keep as many of the Monterey community students together as possible, Welby Community School is ready to accept all K-6 th grade students and the Mapleton Expeditionary School of the Arts (MESA) will accept all 7th and 8th graders. However, your family will have priority placement at any Mapleton school. I know this news might be upsetting during an already trying back-to-school season. We are committed to the success of Monterey’s students and will only open buildings where we can confidently provide for their safety and comfort.
