UPDATE – September 28, 2017
Posted by Andy Leapley on 9/28/2017- Big Picture was designed with a Junior Institute and Senior Institute. Both Institutes have a common space used for whole school meetings and celebrations.
- As you walk through Big Picture, you’ll notice a color progression. The classrooms are very subtle and calming because classrooms are a focus area.
- The common spaces are more social gathering zones and study areas, so the brighter colors (lime greens, bright blues) reflect dynamic and active spaces.
- The school features lots of little corners and nooks for students to peel off and work and collaborate.
- Several of the walls throughout the school are also dry erase walls, meaning students may write on them with dry erase marker. These walls are meant to encourage project work because Big Picture is a very project-based school. We envision students working together, jotting down ideas and thinking through projects on these walls.
- The school also features a Makers Space, to allow for creative projects from art to robotics to woodworking.
- The classroom desks are not standard square, they are pie shaped. The purpose of the pie-shaped desk is to allow for a lot of flexibility in classroom design and group work. The desks can be easily regrouped into small groups, one large circle or lined individually. This flexibility is an essential part of the Big Picture model.
- Circles are a popular Big Picture theme, and there are a lot of circles around the school – from the barn doors to the carpet. The circle in the main gathering space is large enough to get the entire school around it for Pick Me Ups.
