Francis Bacon penned, “A wise man will make more opportunities than he finds.” In Mapleton Public Schools, we are fortunate to have a bold creator of opportunities on our Board of Education. That person, Mr. Steve Donnell, has served on Mapleton’s Board since 2013. Far from a passive observer of public education, Mr. Donnell embodies the courageous and innovative spirit of Mapleton by tenaciously seeking out the opportunities our students need to achieve their dreams.
A resident of the Mapleton community for more than four decades, Mr. Donnell is a parent and grandparent of Mapleton graduates and confidently leads with the notion that where we are, and where we have been, is not where we will be. He does not linger long at the peak of success, rather continues to reach higher toward the next goal, the next adventure, the next opportunity. He reminds us all to continually ask, “what else can we do for our students?”
Mr. Donnell’s dedication to the success of all students drives him to serve beyond his role on the Board. He is a leader in our attendance and literacy initiatives, has served on the Mapleton Education Foundation student scholarship committee, as well as the negotiations and construction accountability committees. In his own words, he dreams of making Mapleton a “destination district,” and his work is certainly making his dream, as well as the dreams of our staff and students, come true.
It is with great pride that the Mapleton Board of Education nominates Mr. Steve Donnell for the 2019 McGuffey Award.
