Board of Education Director Districts

Board of Education Director Districts

The Board of Education approved new School Board Director Districts to ensure that constituents from all geographic areas of the District are more equally represented through Board governance. The changes were made based on the most recent federal census data, which found that there was more than a 10 percent difference in population between the smallest and the largest director district.

The district boundaries were adjusted, consistent with legal requirements, to create changes to director district boundaries which would render them more equal in population. This redistricting process occurs every four years, prior to an election.

In 2018, Mapleton’s voters approved the School Board director district plan. Prior to the director district plan, Mapleton’s five Board of Education members served at large, with no designated director districts. This provided no assurance that all Mapleton neighborhoods were represented on the Board of Education.

Beginning with the 2019 Board of Education elections, Mapleton’s five Board of Education members will now each represent one of five director districts. Director districts  help Mapleton continue to respond to the needs of the community by ensuring that our Board of Education members stay connected, visible and in touch with the needs of their neighbors and neighborhood.

The Mapleton Board of Education comprises five elected community volunteers who work many hours each year to represent the community and lead the District.

The Board approves the District curriculum, instructional materials, and annual budget.

FAQ

How were the director districts determined?

The director districts were designed to be as equal in population as possible using census and county information. If the proposed plan of representation is approved, the new policy BBB would require periodic reviews of the director district boundaries.

What is the purpose of director districts?

School board members are elected representatives of the residents in the school district in which they reside. Through director districts, all neighborhoods in Mapleton Public Schools will have representation on the Board of Education. Current Board of Education members believe this plan will help them continue to respond to the needs of the community by ensuring board directors are connected, visible, and in touch with the needs of their neighbors and neighborhood.
