Monterey Community School
Growing confident and capable learners
At Monterey, we are a community of resilient learners dedicated to growing confident and capable leaders, by developing students who articulate thoughts and effectively use language to communicate ideas, in order to positively impact our community in a school characterized by:
- Relevant and challenging instruction that meets the needs of each child.
- An encouraging and inclusive environment.
- A purposeful focus on learning habits.
- Multiple opportunities to communicate learning in a variety of formats.
Literacy instruction is delivered within a workshop model, where students thrive in a choice-based environment designed to meet individual learning needs. At the elementary grades, social studies and science content standards are embedded into the literacy units. Starting in the sixth grade, students fully explore these topics in depth every day. Math instruction focuses on a rigorous, cohesive progression of fundamental skills, critical thinking, and conceptual understanding.
Art, Music, and Physical Education are a regular part of students’ instruction. Starting in 6th grade, students choose their quarterly electives. In addition to offering strong core academic instruction, Monterey teachers focus on the habits and mindsets required to be successful in academics and life by purposefully teaching skills like resilience, collaboration, communication through all mediums and various other 21st Century skills.
Monterey’s families are a welcome and integral part of our school community. We partner together to participate in community events where staff and families can exchange ideas and work together to support all students. Events include: Back to School Night, Literacy Night, Fall Carnival, movie nights, Presentations of Learning, middle school dances, field trips, and more!
