Title 1
Title I, Part A of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) is the largest federal program supporting both elementary and secondary education. The purpose of Title I, Part A is to provide resources to schools and districts to ensure that all children have a fair, equitable, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and close educational achievement gaps. The program's resources are allocated based on the poverty rates of students enrolled in schools and districts.
Schools use funds from Title I, Part A to:
- Support Academic Achievement: Funds are used to improve instruction in reading and mathematics, particularly for at-risk children.
- Improve Schoolwide Programs: High-poverty schools can use funds to upgrade the entire educational program to serve all students.
- Improve Targeted Assistance: Schools with lower poverty rates can use funds to provide extra educational support to specific students identified as failing or most at risk of failing.
- Provide Professional Development: Funds provide training for teachers and staff to improve their skills in instruction.
- Foster Family Engagement: Encourages programs and activities that promote parent and family involvement in their children's education.
- Support Specific Needs: Resources are used for additional staff, materials, and after-school/summer instruction.
