Mapleton Board of Education Secretary, Sheila Montoya, Awarded 2020 McGuffey Award
Mapleton Board of Education Secretary, Sheila Montoya, was awarded the 2020 McGuffey Award from the Colorado Association of School Boards (CASB)!
The CASB McGuffey Award honors unique board members who bring committed and passionate service to their board work. Sheila is a celebrated and admired member of Mapleton’s Board of Education who has guided policies, refined practices, and protected public education with her unique lens as a district parent and district graduate. For nearly seven years after she was elected in 2013, Sheila was the only parent serving on the Board of Education. At the Board’s businesses meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 27, Board President Cynthia Croisant surprised Sheila with news of her nomination, saying it was “well deserved.” A powerful advocate for public education, Sheila has used her voice and her vote to improve Mapleton’s school buildings, enhance district safety and security measures, and weave family engagement into the fabric of our work in meaningful ways. As a community leader, a mentor, and a mother, she is a deeply rooted visionary, valued for honoring how far we have come and cherished for inspiring us to dream into the future for all of Mapleton’s children.
“It left me speechless, which does not happen very often…it is a real honor,” Sheila said as she expressed her gratitude for receiving the McGuffey Award.
