Academy senior headed to Valley Forge

Every year, one student from each state is selected to receive the highly-competitive Spirit of America Youth Leadership Program scholarship. This scholarship provides students an all-expenses-paid visit to the Freedom Foundation at Valley Forge in Philadelphia to attend the Spirit of America Youth Leadership Conference.

This year, we are thrilled to announce the student selected from Colorado is our very own Academy High School senior and Air Force JROTC cadet, Jose P. Jose will attend the conference at the end of this week, Nov. 1 – 4. Jose will be joined by 49 other Air Force Junior ROTC cadets representing all corners of the country as he represents Mapleton and Colorado.

Jose has participated in Mapleton’s JROTC program since his freshman year. Jose is grateful for the support he’s received from the JROTC program. When reflecting on his three years in the JROTC, Jose said, “ROTC helped me find a way to change for the better.”

Although there were many times where he was close to giving up, he persevered. “He didn’t just follow the crowd,” said Lt. Col. William Arrington, Mapleton’s JROTC Senior Aerospace Science Instructor. “He stuck with something bigger and that’ll take him far.”

Jose hopes to go into the military post-graduation and pursue a medical career. At the Spirit of America Youth Leadership Conference, Jose will participate in workshops, activities about American rights and responsibilities, attend banquets and hear from an impressive list of keynote speakers, among other events.

Jose is grateful for the experiences he’s had with Mapleton’s JROTC program, including meeting a lot of new people who he considers his good friends. He looks forward to sharing his knowledge with his fellow JROTC cadets and represent Colorado #TheMapletonWay!

Congratulations, Jose!
