MESA students serve as ambassadors for virtual EL conference

MESA students serve as ambassadors at upcoming virtual EL Summit

MESA students will serve as student ambassadors at the upcoming What Matters Most: EL Education 2020 Virtual Summit on October 22-23. Students were nominated by their teachers. In lieu of an in-person national conference, attendees will gather virtually at as an educational community committed to racial justice, quality curriculum, and social-emotional learning for all to meet this moment and focus on promising practices that can guide our work, no matter the setting. 
 
One of the important tenets of EL Education is supporting students in becoming leaders of their own learning. While EL curriculum at MESA gives students many opportunities for choice in their projects and topics of study, this Virtual Summit will provide student leaders the chance to teach teachers! They will share their opinions and insights about what matters most in education and how today’s unique climate and circumstances impact their learning.
 
Eight MESA staff members are attending the summit and joining our student ambassadors in classes. In addition, one staff member, Angela Perry, was selected as a presenter for a session she created about Presentations of Learning in a Remote Setting. Ms. Perry will be sharing successes from last year’s "Virtual Passages Presentations” and she will be bringing along several juniors to talk about their experience as well.
 
During a typical in-person national conference, student ambassadors are conference hosts, program guides, they serve on panels, and often lead CREW circles. During this year’s virtual summit, MESA students are collaborating with another EL Education high school in Aurora, William Smith High School, and will virtually attend sessions alongside adult educator attendees and participate in discussions. Students will explain how students engage in learning at MESA and provide insight into how MESA students are addressing issues of racial justice, quality learning during a pandemic, and social-emotional learning.
