Mapleton Public Schools - Small by design, big on success!

Mapleton is not your ordinary school district. Over the past decade, Mapleton Public Schools has responded to the needs of its community by reinventing much of what public education looks like. Staying committed to the uniqueness and potential of every child, Mapleton offers a robust menu of learning options to engage and inspire students.

Families moving into Mapleton Public Schools have exciting choices to make when it comes to selecting a school for their child. Families are invited to learn more about our schools by:

  • Visiting our school websites to learn more about school programs, news, events, and staff
  • Contacting schools to arrange tours
  • Visiting our Welcome Center (8990 York St., Thornton, 80229)
  • Attending school discovery fairs (held in January of each year)

If we can help answer any questions along the way, contact us at communications@mapleton.us

District of Choice

In Mapleton, there are no 'neighborhood' schools. This means that instead of being automatically enrolled in a neighborhood school, we invite families to select from a full menu of schools that are small-by-design. School models include Expeditionary Learning (EL), International Baccalaureate, University Partnership, Community School, Young Adult, Leadership, Online, and Workshop model. Our schools also offer families a range of grade levels, including K-6 schools,  K-8 schools, a 7-12 school, 9-12 schools, and a K-12 school.

You choose your school and we get you there

In doing away with "catchment areas," where students enroll in the school nearest their home, Mapleton implemented a comprehensive, complex transportation plan to support the choice philosophy. Students living within the District boundaries receive free transportation to their school of choice (if the school is more than one mile away from their home). Mapleton's Transportation Department safely buses more than 3,500 students to their school of choice every school day.

But the bus ride doesn't stop there. Mapleton's fleet of more than 42 buses also provides transportation to early morning band, orchestra and choir practice, athletics and Air Force JROTC practice, after-school tutoring and exciting field experiences outside of the classroom.

Points of Pride

Student enrollment is up!

Over the past decade, Mapleton has celebrated a steady increase in the number of students choosing to attend Mapleton schools.

New curriculum with solid and engaging materials

Mapleton is challenging and engaging students with new curriculum materials that are aligned with Colorado State Standards. New curriculum materials include Advanced Placement texts for World History, Statistics, and Calculus, preschool math, and literacy and science programs for all grade levels. Mapleton's teachers receive some of the best training available in reading, math, science and social studies, and test results are trending in the right direction.

Improving the growth and achievement of students is a District-wide effort. Since introducing the District of Choice system and schools that are small-by-design, Mapleton has celebrated impressive and positive changes. Trends over the past several years show higher graduation rates and lower drop out rates. Enrollment is up, and attendance is also improving. Mapleton continues to identify ways to improve education for all students, at all schools. Some current initiatives include:

  • Offering music, art and physical education at all K-8 schools
  • Integrated Services and mental health supports at every school to address social, emotional and mental health needs
  • Expanding Early Childhood Education programs

College and Career-going culture

Every year, nearly 100 percent of Mapleton seniors apply to college, and 98 percent of seniors are accepted into the college of their choice. In Mapleton's small, safe, family-like environments, students receive the support and encouragement they need to pursue the post-secondary passion of their choice.

Since 2008, graduating seniors have received millions of dollars in scholarships. Most recently, the class of 2018 received a combined $4 million in scholarships. This includes several Daniels Fund scholarship recipients and Boettcher scholarship recipients, two of Colorado's most prestigious scholarship programs.

Mapleton's graduates are currently attending schools all over the state, country, and world, including Colorado School of Mines, University of Colorado, University of Denver, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, New York University Campus in Abu Dhabi, Princeton, Yale University, Stanford University, and West Point Military Academy, just to name a few.

Mapleton believes students need both a broad education and specific skills to ensure successful, long-term careers. CareerXploration is a new program for seventh and eighth-grade students aimed at encouraging students to be actively engaged in activities that expose them to the world of work through a variety of career options. Students choose from an array of content-based electives, including outdoor adventures, culinary arts, engineering, mathematics through art, forensic science, environmental studies, and others. CareerXploration is offered at all Mapleton schools with seventh and eighth grades.

Healthy, from-scratch cooking in all school cafeterias

Nutrition Services recognizes that when children are well-nourished, their ability to learn improves. With the continuous emphasis on improving the student's ability to learn, the Mapleton Public Schools Nutrition Services Department has made a serious commitment to providing delicious and well-balanced meals for your children. The District supports a from-scratch philosophy that has revamped the breakfast and lunch menu to include healthy and tasty items that are anything but typical cafeteria food.

Through regular taste tests, all Mapleton students play an important role in deciding what makes in on the menu. Three of this year's new student-approved menu items include scratch-baked macaroni and cheese, chicken pot pie and tomato soup.

Free breakfast is offered to all students at all Mapleton schools. Click here for more information about Mapleton's Nutrition Services Department

New, 21st-century school buildings in all corners of the District

In November 2016, the residents of Mapleton said 'yes' to reinvesting in their schools! The $150 million bond issue is being used to fund replacements, renovations and repairs in nearly all Mapleton schools. The multi-year capital construction program is already underway and details about each project can be found on our Capital Construction Program page.

Additional Points of Pride:

  • Mapleton's schools serve toddlers through young adults
  • The Skyview Wolverines league-leading athletics program is available to students in grades 6th - 12th
  • Mapleton's award-winning Performing Arts program offers choir, band, marching band, theater/drama club, and orchestra. More than 700 students in grades 6 - 12 participate in Performing Arts, making it one of Mapleton's most successful extracurricular activities.
  • Mapleton offers one of the few Air Force JROTC programs available in the state of Colorado. Each year, nearly 90 cadets participate in the program. Cadets in this program have earned numerous awards and most recently passed inspection from Air Force JROTC Headquarters - an incredible achievement!
