Safety Awareness - 'Buster the Bus'

The Transportation Department brings bus safety awareness to students in grade K-3 with Buster the Bus.  Buster the Bus helps present a safety program teaching students crosswalk safety and other bus rules and regulations, such as teaching students how to line up, enter and exit the bus, among other topics.  Currently, Buster the Bus is touring the following Mapleton schools.

Employee of the Month for August 2023

Bobbi has been awarded Employee of the Month!  Bobbi is always willing to go ‘Above and Beyond’ to complete tasks.   

Adolph Chavez, Transportation Manager said the following about Bobbi, “Bobbi's attendance is awesome. She is always at work with minimal days out and is very knowledgeable about her job.”

Robert Martinez, Transportation Trainer said the following about Bobbi, “She is always on time and comes in ready to start her day, I have never heard Bobbi complain about anything that she is asked to do.  She is always ready to step up and help with anything that we need to get covered.  She has a great attitude and if anyone needs help, Bobbi is there to assist with whatever needs to be addressed.”

Phil Faustin, Fleet Manager said the following about Bobbi, “She always stays on top of pre-trip inspections and notifies the shop of any issues found on her bus. Bobbi always has a positive attitude and spreads positivity to the whole department. She is always willing to pitch in and help out in any capacity needed. She is a true team player!”

Student Riders of the Month for April 2023

Steve was nominated as the 1st ‘Student Rider of the Month’ for April 2023 by David Cortez, bus driver and Deb D. of the Penguin bus.  Stephen is a 5th grader and attends Welby Community. David and Deb said the following about Steven; “Steven always greets us with a smile when he boards the bus. He is extremely helpful with the younger students and sets a good example. We miss him when he is not on the bus. It is always a joy to have him on the bus. I want to thank him for all his support throughout the school year.” Congratulations Steven!

Elizabeth & Esmeralda have been nominated as the 2nd & 3rd “Student Riders of the Month" for April 2023 by Roanne Romero, bus driver, and Irene Barrientos, paraprofessional of the Elephant bus. Elizabeth is a 6th grader and Esmeralda is a 3rd grader. They both attend Trailside Academy.  Roanne said the following about both sisters; “Elizabeth and Esmeralda should be considered for ‘Student Riders of the Month’.  They are very good bus riders and follow all the bus rules.  They are also very polite, always responding when greeted and are responsible for having their Paw passes every single day.  Elizabeth always looked out for her younger sister Esmeralda.  It has been a pleasure having them on the Elephant Bus.”  Congratulations Elizabeth and Esmeralda!

Gabriella was nominated as the 4th “Student Riders of the Month" for April 2023 by Bobbi Kyle, bus driver, and Rhonda Harkless, paraprofessional of the Rhino bus. Gabriella is a 2nd grader who attends Valley View.  Bobbi and Rhonda said the following about Gabriella; “Gabbi has overcome her fear of riding the bus and has learned to ride the bus. She now stays in her seat.  When she is having anxiety, she can refocus.  Once and a while, she’ll have a challenging day, but she has learned to calm down.  She now apologizes for her actions.  She is a very delightful and funny young lady.  She loves to sing or tell stories and shares the songs with the other students.  All the other students get a kick when they hear her.  She gives other students ‘High 5’s’ and says goodbye when they leave the bus.  She is also very helpful, doing student checks while she is still on the bus.”  Congratulations Gabbi!

Elena was nominated as the 5th “Student Riders of the Month" for April 2023 by Bobbi Kyle, bus driver, and Rhonda Harkless, paraprofessional of the Rhino bus. Elena is a Kindergartner who attends Valley View.  Bobbi and Rhonda said the following about Elena; “Elena likes to move around on the bus, and she has learned to calm down and refocus in a short period of time.  We moved her into her own seat, and she has become very independent and doesn't ask her sister for assistance.  She is a delightful young lady with lots of smiles.  She likes to say “goodbye” and to ‘have a nice day’ to the other students leaving the bus.  She is also very helpful and assists us as we do student checks, waiting patiently to get off the bus”.  Congratulations Elena!

Student Riders of the Month for February 2023

Hyde was nominated as the “Student Rider of the Month" for February 2023 by Phil Garcia, bus driver of the Horse bus, and Jennifer Rivera, Para-professional of the Dinosaur bus, and Jolene, bus driver of the Tiger bus.  Hyde is a 6th grader and attends Achieve Academy.

Hyde rides 3 buses to and from school each week, but this is not an issue for her.  Phil and Jennifer said the following, “We nominated Hyde because she is very patient, friendly, and very respectful towards us.  Hyde lights up when she talks about her baby brother.  Phil said she strikes up conversations about interesting topics. Jennifer said she also likes to play Trivia with her and also plays Pokémon.  Hyde is great with the pre-kindergarteners and special needs students on the different buses keeping them occupied and calm when the buses are on route”. Emma was nominated as the 2nd “Student Rider of the Month" for February 2023 by Elsa Ponce, bus driver of the Sheep bus.  Emma is a 5th grader and attends York International.

 

Elsa said the following, “Emma is such a kind and sweet student who is very respectful towards me and other students riding the bus. She welcomes me with a ‘Good Morning’ and she always thanks me when departing the bus.  She is quiet while on the bus, and, at times, I don’t even realize that she is on the bus.  Emma’s attitude and kindness are reasons why I enjoy being a bus driver”.  Congratulations Emma!

School Bus of the Month for February 2023

All the students who ride the Leopard bus are being recognized for their outstanding behavior. The Leopard bus takes the honor of School Bus of the Month for February 2023.  These students use their manners when boarding and getting off the bus; they are patient and respectful.  They are also at the stops on time and wait to be crossed at every stop.

Student Riders of the Month for January 2023

Jessie Marie was nominated as the "Student Rider of the Month" for January, 2023 by Dakota Jones, a bus driver of the Hippo bus, and Melinda Cortez, a paraprofessional.  Jessie Marie is a 3rd grader and attends York International.

Dakota and Melinda said the following, “We nominated Jessie because she is a very nice and respectful student. Jessie is very talented and creative. While on the bus, she works on art and craft projects, such as creating a boat made with cardboard and paper.  This artwork was an Asian boat with Japanese writing on it.  I, Dakota, was pleasantly surprised to read her message on that boat.  I read and speak Japanese.  She is a joy to have on the Hippo bus.”  Congratulations Jessie Marie!

Serena was nominated as the 3rd "Student Rider of the Month" for January 2023 by Bobbi Kyle, bus driver of the Rhino bus, and Rhonda Harkless-Rivera, paraprofessional.  Serena is a 6th grader and attends Trailside Academy.

Anaya was nominated as the 4th "Student Rider of the Month" for January 2023 by Pam Stewart of the Lion bus.  Anaya is a 3rd grader and attends Welby Community.

Student Rider of the Month for November 2022

Patricio has been nominated as the "Student Rider of the Month" for November 2022 by Jolene Garcia, a bus driver of the Tiger.  Patricio is a 12th grader and attends Laradon School.  Jolene said the following, "Patricio is a special young man with many challenges that he has overcome. He does not verbally communicate; however, he does understand what you are saying."  Jolene has had many successes with Patricio the past few months.  This is Patricio's last school year, and we wish him a positive future.  Congratulations Patricio!

Hocus Pocus Halloween Event - October 2022

The Transportation staff celebrated Halloween this year.  The theme was Hocus Pocus and the menu consisted of Maggot Beef Stew, Frankenstein green dip, Life Potion cheese dip, Mummy hot dogs, Vampire salsa, Black Cat fruit tray and various other dishes.  We also had a costume and pumpkin contest.  The pumpkin displays were very creative, especially since the pumpkins could not be carved.  Transportation employees had a wonderful time.  I have included several photos.

Student Riders of the Month for October 2022

Oliver has been nominated as the "Student Rider of the Month" for October 2022 by Mary Moore, a bus driver.  Oliver is a 4th grader and attends Spectra.  Mary said the following, “Oliver is a real joy to have on the Whale bus/van.  Oliver is a ‘happy go lucky’ young man that meets the bus/van with a smile every morning.  He is very patient waiting for other students to get ready to leave school.  He will offer verbal support to the other students who are having a hard day.  I really enjoy having Oliver on my bus.  He makes my day every day!” Congratulations Oliver!

Jeremiah has been nominated as the 2nd "Student Rider of the Month" for October 2022 by Armando Ojeda, a bus driver.  Jeremiah is a 2nd grader and attends Evoke. Armando said the following, “Jeremiah is always in a good mood and happy to see me.  He always asks how I am doing during both the am and pm routes.  He is very polite and stays in his seat until it is time for him to get off the bus.  I have been driving a school bus for many years and he is one of the best students I have ever met.  He is one of the reasons I want to continue being a bus driver.”  Congratulations Jeremiah!

Jocelyn has been nominated as the 3rd "Student Rider of the Month" for October 2022 by Roanne Romero, a bus driver.  Jocelyne is a 7th grader and attends Trailside. Roanne said the following, “Jocelyne approached me and asked if she could help with the emergency evacuation. She took the initiative, helping the kids get out of the rear door of the bus. She did not show any fear and did not slow down.  She deserves to be the Student Rider of the Month.” Congratulations Jocelyne!

Michael has been nominated as the 4th "Student Rider of the Month" for October 2022 by Trevor Rivera, a bus driver.  Michael is a Pre-K student and attends POP.  Trevor said the following, “Michael is a joy to have on my Zebra bus.  He always brings a smiling face when he boards the bus.  He has learned to buckle himself in his Besi seat.  This is a huge help to me since we have 4 other Pre-K students to buckle in when they all board the bus at the same stop.  When we are at the railroad tracks, before crossing, he always announces the bus is getting ready to cross the tracks and asks for quiet, then thanks all the students after we cross the tracks.  Thank you Michael for all your help.”  Congratulations Michael!

Student Rider of the Month for September 2022

Neeko has been nominated as the "Student Rider of the Month" for September 2022 by Robert Martinez.  Neeko is an 8th grader and attends Explore. Robert said the following, “Neeko is the most respectful student that rides on my bus.  He acknowledges me by saying, ‘Good Morning’ and always has a smile on his face.  He is very helpful and assists me by buckling up the Pre-K students.  He wants to help me, so I don’t have to get up.  Neeko is a ‘Great’ kid.  Congratulations Neeko!
